!BANG! TV Report - WWE Hall of Fame Inductee, Antonio Inoki vs Dory Funk Jr.

A meeting was arranged in Las Vegas in the fall of 1969. At the meeting was Japan Pro Wrestling Representative, Charley Moto, my father, Dory Funk Sr., NWA President, Sam Muchnick and Myself. Mr. Moto made a financial offer to NWA President Sam Muchnick and I for the NWA World Championship Match, Dory Funk Jr. vs Antonio Inoki and we accepted. We took him at his word as in those days there were no contracts.

My father, Dory Funk Sr. traveled with me on that first trip to Japan. My first match for the NWA World Championship in Japan was in the winter of 1969 against Antonio Inoki. We were both in excellent condition and evenly matched. My Father, Dory Funk Sr. was in my corner.

As the bell rang, I remember Dad saying, ""Don't let that &%#@! Inoki get the best of you." I remember thinking, "I hope these people don't speak English." (Dad was a combat veteran from WWII serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific) I thought, "Better to fight Inoki than to face the wrath of my father."


Wrestling Inoki was the kind of match I enjoy, fast paced, competitive and for the highest stakes in the wrestling business, The NWA World Championship. At about the 45 minute mark, I shot for a single leg pickup. Inoki blocked, pushing me toward the corner of the ring. I released and turned using his momentum to crash him backward into the corner. I threw a forearm to his body and one at his chest. In a flash of anger, He swung a punch at me and in seconds, this great wrestling match turned into a brawl.


We fought through the ropes and on to the floor, both of us swinging wildly at each other. In an effort to rid myself of Inoki's punches, I reached for his head, and wound up with a handful of hair,. I grabbed tight and threw him off. He landed against the announcer's table and sagged to his knees. With a breath of air, I returned to the ring. As I looked back, my father was standing over Inoki. Dad reached out to help him back into the ring. When Dad touched Inoki, the fans were on their feet protesting. They thought he was going to hurt Inoki. From the second balcony I could see a projectile hurdling toward my Father. It must have been thrown by a pitching ace for on of the Japanese baseball teams. Landing with a thud against my father's chest was an orange, it split open and there was fresh orange juice running down my father's new gray silk suit. In anger, dad shook his fist at the balcony.


The final 10 minutes of the match were bedlam. Dad was on the ring apron several times, the fans were on their feet, and periodically oranges would fly into the ring. Now, the bell was ringing. The one hour time limit had elapsed. This match was a draw and I knew I would retain the NWA World Heavyweight Championship Belt. I walked to Inoki, shook his hand and told him, "Great match."

Funk's Corner - Breakfast with WWE Hall of Fame Inductee, the "Million Dollar Man, Ted Dibiase and Family

Monday night on Raw, one of my early students of professional wrestling, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase was announced as the first inductee to the WrestleMania 26 Hall of Fame.

After the loss of his father, Iron Mike Dibiase of a heart attack in the ring in Lubbock, Texas, Ted Dibiase said to me, "If this business was good enough for my mom and dad, It is good enough for me. This is what I want to do." (Ted's mother was one of the most beautiful Ladies in the wrestling business, Helen Hilde. Iron Mike Dibiase, Amateur wrestler from University of Nebraska, was one of the toughest men in the business)

Now as an inductee of the WWE Hall of Fame, The Million Dollar Man, Ted Dibiase earns recognition as one of professional wrestling's all time great wrestlers and box office attractions.

Watching the special on Ted Dibiase brought back memories of Amarillo, Texas and the Amarillo Territory.

A wrestling enemy who was a friend of mine was Ted's Father, Iron Mike Dibiase. I had watched my father Dory Funk Sr. wrestle Iron Mike in a famous three hour and ten minute match in Amarillo, Texas. Iron Mike was the man I worked with in the finals of a tournament in Amarillo to earn the right to wrestle Lou Thesz early in my career. At the time Iron Mike was my best friend, even though publicly we were never seen together.

Breaking the kay-fabe Rules

It was 8:00 am, early for wrestlers who worked late and usually were in bed at this time. Breakfast was scrambled eggs, sausage, grits, biscuits, gravy and hot coffee. The guests in my home were Iron Mike Dibiase, his beautiful wife and former lady wrestler, Helen (Hilde) Dibiase, and their young children, Teddy and little John Dibiase. The conversation was warm and friendly and we were enjoying the comradeship.

We were, "breaking kay-fabe," and enjoying ourselves immensely, especially young Teddy who was only 11 years old at the time and his little brother John. What happened next was a real nightmare!

The Return of Monday Night War was an emotional ride,
having coached the two featured superstars on WWE and TNA.

I first met Kurt Angle At the WWE Funking Dojo.
As Kurt's coach I told him everything he has accomplished
in amateur wrestling he can accomplish in professional wrestling and he has.
 

Bret Hart has been a friend of since 1970 when I worked for Stu Hart
in Calgary as NWA World Champion.
I was Bret Hart's Coach when he came to visit my home in Texas at the age of 17.
I taught him to water ski on Lake Meredith just north of Amarillo.
 
 
Stu Hart will be inducted into the  2010 WWE Hall of Fame at Wrestlemania.
I can never forget the good times working for Stu and getting to know the entire Hart Family.

Now on !BANG! TV from November of 1992, Dory Funk Jr., Andre The Giant (Last Tour of Japan) and Kenta Kobashi vs Johnny Ace (John Laurinaitis) Stan Hansen and Tiger Cat. (Special Commentator, Giant Baba)
 
After touring Japan Andre returned home to France where he attended his father's funeral then passed away January 27 of 1993. Andre the Giant was the first and only inductee to the WWE Hall of Fame in 1993.
 
Andre The Giant was booked in America by Vince McMahon Sr. and was a frequent performer in the Amarillo Territory his specialty being a Two Ring Battle Royal.
 
Andre The Giant was a dear friend of Marti and I as we often traveled throughout Japan traveling on the Japanese bus with Andre, Marti and I being the only foreigners on the bus. Each day, a case of Beaujolais Wine was provided daily for Andre at the front of the bus. Andre was "Boss of the Japanese Bus."

Special Rules will be in effect for the Women's Championship Battle Royal coming to The Funking Conservatory Sound Stage Saturday October 17th in Ocala, Florida.
 
Wrestlers can only be eliminated by throwing their opponents from the ring to the floor under the !BANG! TV sign with both feet hitting the floor. Wrestlers thrown from the ring on any other side to the floor will not be eliminated from competition and may return to the ring. Fighting outside the ring can be an automatic disqualifying move determined by the Guest Referee, !BANG! TV Light Heavyweight Champion, Johnny Romano.

During Dory Funk Jr.'s presentation of the !BANG! TV Blue Ribbon Award for Outstanding Performance in a Webisode to accepting athletes, "The Claw," Claudia Reiff and "The Wasilla Wrecking Crew," Rachael Moore and Charlotte Mahoy all are rudely interrupted by Funking Conservatory World Champion, Shane Chung who snatches the microphone from Funk's hand.

Mitsuharu Misawa - 1962 - 2009

We are very sad with all pro-wrestling fans in Japan.

Misawa was one of my first students after Jumbo Tsuruta from 1981.

Right out of high school Baba, Jumbo Tsuruta,Tendryu and myself were teaching Misawa All Japan Pro Wrestling ring techniques.

We weep with Japan over memoris of Misawa.

Misawa will be missed by wrestling fans around the world.

We will never forget Misawa

At WrestleMania 25 in Houston, I will be inducted into the
WWE Hall of Fame along with my brother, Terry Funk.

Much of my wrestling career took place in Japan beginning in 1969
with a very famous NWA World Championship Title Defense against
Antonio Inoki and has continued into the present.

I would like to thank All Japan Pro Wrestling,
Keiji Muto and the Japanese People for their support
for so many years as a professional wrestler and t
rainer of wrestlers.

On several occasions in Japan I have faced one of Osamu Nishimura's
Opponents on the next Sumo Hall show, Riki Choshu.

As Nishimura's coach, my advice is to forget about the personal
differences you have with Choshu and let your performance
in the ring do the talking.

My thanks to the McMahon Family and the World Wrestling
Entertainment team for the honor of being inducted to the
WWE Hall of Fame.

I am looking forward to the Induction ceremony in Houston, Texas.

Osamu Nishimura will be on !BANG! TV two days Saturday
September 6th and Sunday September 7th.
 
September 6th will be training session at the Funking Conservatroy
Exhibition style and open to the public.
 
Funking Conservatory wrestlers will be trying out for
positions with All Japan Pro Wrestling.
 
Leading candidates are Elvis "Hunk of Burning Love
" Sharp, Blain Rage, Shane Chung,
Johnny Magnum and Demien Steele.
 
Nishimura will be wrestling the second night, September 7th

All Japan Pro Wrestling's Osamu Nishimura will be at the Funking Conservatory the first week in September to conduct a seminar on, Professional Wrestling in Japan.
The seminar will cover professional wrestling Japanese Style vs American style. Japanese Language Courtesies and Culture.

Osamu Nishimura will also be wrestling on !BANG! TV
Sunday September 7th.

Keiji Muto will have his 2nd defense of the IWGP Championship September 31 and Suwama will defend the Triple Crown Championship for the second time on September 31 when All Japan Pro Wrestling Returns to Sumo Hall.
Good luck to Suwama san and Muto san.

I have good memories of my last trip to Japan and Sumo Hall.

来る９月の一週目、全日本プロレスの西村修がファンキングコンサバトリーにいて
プロレスセミナーをおこないます。日本のプロレスとアメリカのプロレス、
スタイル、言葉、文化の０違いについてのセミナーです。
それとともに９月７日はBanｇTVShowの試合に西村修が出場いたします。
武藤選手はIWGPのベルトを２度目の防衛に成功いたしました。
３冠チャンピオンの諏訪間は８月３１日に二度目の防衛戦を両国国技館において
おこないます。
私は最後の日本ツアーと、国技館での大変いい思い出でした。

Our Special Guest at the Funking Conservatory !BANG! TV
Taping Sunday July 13 was Osamu Nishimura.

In a Six Man Tag Team Match, Nishimura, Funk and Magnum won over Blain Rage,Shane Chung and Elvis Sharp when Elvis caught Johnny Magnum with off balance with a Cradle and Half nelson.
Official for this important match was Claudia "The Claw" Reiff.

This was our second !BANG! TV Taping since moving into our

new facility just south of the Ocala Airport.

We are very pleased with our new building.
 
The six man tag team match was video taped for !BANG! TV and
will be online in my next blog.

Good luck to All Japan Pro Wrestling and to Sha Cho Keiji Muto, Osamu Nishimura, Masanobu Fuchi and the Funking Conservatory's Antonio Thomas on the upcoming tour starting July 20th.

７月１３日に行われましたファンキングコンサバトリーのBangTVテーピングの
今回のスペシャルゲストは西村選手です。

６人タッグマッチに出場し、ドリーファンクジュニア、ニシムラ、
ジョニーマグナムがシェーンチャング、エルビス・シャープ、ブライン・レイジと対戦し
ジョニーマグナムが見事エルビスシャープに勝利を収めました。

この試合は我々が新たにオカラ国際空港のちょうど南側に位置する、
新しいビルディング施設に移り２試合目の試合にあたります。

Beginning in 1969 in Japan, I have faced two "Super Legends"
Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki in single championship matches.
 
There is one "Super Legend" I am sad to have missed the opportunity
to wrestle in a single match.
 
He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Japanese wrestlers of
all time both in Japan and America.
 
He is a super legend in Japan and America from his days staring on the
"International Super Station"  WTBS while wrestling for WCW.
 
He is the current IWGP Heavyweight Champion

1983 - I was booking for Jim Crockett Jr. in the Mid-Atlantic Territory.
 
Masanobu Fuchi was traveling with with Me from Charlotte North Carolina to Raleigh North Carolina on the old two lane U.S. highway 49.
 
Fuchi was driving my 1980 F-150 Super Cab pickup truck for the first time.
 
We were talking about Fuchi's future with All Japan Pro Wrestling.
 
Unlike most American made cars, the horn on the F-150 Super Cab was only a button located on the lower right of the steering wheel.
 
An oncoming car pulled out to pass on the single lane road and was

coming at us head-on.

１９８３年私はジムクロケットジュニアにミッドアトランティックテリトリーのブッキングがありました。
ある日、フチ選手とノースカロライナシャーロットからラレイまで私のフォードのピックアップトラックを彼に初めて運転させたときのできごと。

車の中で夢中でフチ選手の将来、全日本の未来について語り合いました
私の車はつくりがすこし違いクラクションはハンドルの真ん中ではなく、右下にある変わったつくりの車でした。

すると、私たちの車を追い越そうとした車が私たちが完全に見えなかったのか、数インチまで近寄ってきました。気をつけろ。ぶつかるぞ。と、私は叫んでしまいました。
あやうく二人は命を落とすところでした

フチ選手が危機一髪、クラクションを鳴らし、事故を回避できたのです
これは奇跡に相当するできごとです。初めて運転した車。
しかもクラクションの位置など想像もつかない場所にある車をうんてんし、
見事に瞬間にしてクラクションを鳴らせたのですから

もしもクラクションが逆に右下に無かったらを考えるとぞっとする想いです
この神の手を持つフチ選手にあらためて御礼を申し上げたい

Two New Champions in Japan - Great Muta and Suwama

With Keiji Muto's recent victory over Shinsuke Nakamura

(4/27 in Osaka) and Suwama's recent victory over

 Kensuke Sasaki (4/29 at the Aichi Perfectural Gymnasium),

All Japan Pro Wrestling now has thetwo most important Japanese wrestling championship belts under their banner, the Triple Crown Championship (Suwama) and New Japan Pro Wrestling's
IWGP Championship (Keiji Mutoh).

The credibility of these two championships and the popularity

of Muto (Known in America as Great Muta) and Suwama's

wrestling background (Chuo University Amateur Wrestler)

- Same University as Jumbo Tsuruta) will have a big influence

in the popularity of All Japan Pro Wrestling.

On my first trip to Japan as NWA World Champion defending

against the challenge of Antonio Inoki in 1969, My father,

Dory Funk Sr. traveled with me.
Dory Funk Sr.'s opponent was Hiro Matsuda.
 
I first met Osamu Nishimura in 1994
 
Nishimura introduced himself, "My name is Osamu Nishimura.

My teacher is Hiro Matsuda.
 
In the year of 2000 After the passing of Hiro Matsuda,

Osamu Nishimura came to the Funking Conservatory Wrestling

School in Ocala, Florida and asked if I would be his teacher.
 
April of 2008, Osamu Nishimura and Dory Funk Jr. toast to a

"New Beginning" as the Funking Conservatory is officially

recognized by All Japan Pro Wrestling as the Official

Developmental Dojo for All Japan Pro Wrestling.

Saturday March 29 at the Funking Conservatory

Osamu Nishimura was our special guest
scouting talent for All Japan Pro Wrestling.

The program was for Nishimura to train with 5 of our

best Funking Conservatory wrestlers,
each putting their best efforts on Nishimura.
Osamu Nishimura became the "Iron Man of Professional Wrestling" 

in the Funking Conservatory.    

In single training matches Nishimura wrestled with Flyin' Ryan

"Air" Mitchell (a recently signed talent of All Japan ),

Blain Rage, Shane Chung and Elvis Sharp.

Next Nishimura  wrestled in a 6 man tag team training match,

 - Nishimura,  Flyin' Ryan and Shane Chung vs Elvis Sharp,

Chris "The Animal" James, and Blain Rage.
 
Osamu trained with weights then wrestled equal to an hour

match and was ready to party  with the Funking Conservatory

team at the Kotobuki Restaurant in Ocala, Florida that night.

３月２９日ファンキングコンサバトリーにオサム・ニシムラがスペシャルゲストと

いたしまして全日本のトライアウトへの視察に参りました。

プログラムはファンキングコンサバトリーの５人のベストレスラーが
ニシムラとのトレーニングをおこない、奮闘いたしました。
オサム・ニシムラはファンキングコンサバトリーのアイアンマンとなりました。

シングルマッチがおこなわれライアン・ミッシェル、ブライアン・レイジ、
シェーン・チャング、エルビスシャープと戦いました

次の試合は６人タッグで行われニシムラ、ライアン、シェ−ンチャング組 対　
エルビスシャープ、ザ・アニマル・ジェームス、ブライアン・レイジ組。

晩にはファンキングコンサバトリーのメンバーたちとのオカラ・フロリダでの
夜を楽しむためにオサムはウエートトレーニングを、それからレスリングをし、
一時間の試合に匹敵する練習をしました。

March 28 will be Unites States Congressman Cliff Stearns

who wants to talk with Osamu Nishimura about professional

wrestling in Japan.
 
Congressman Stearns has been a supporter of the Funking

Conservatory wrestling school and is interested in our safety

program for professional wrestlers.
 
Happy Birthday to Elvis Sharp who turns 20 years old today.
Elvis will be challenging Blain Rage for the Funking Conservatory

World Championship
this Sunday March 23rd, our next !BANG! TV Taping.
 

Gail Kim will be challenging "The Claw" Claudia Reiff
for the women's championship on the same show.

Today I am as excited about coming to Japan as I was on

my first trip to Japan with my father,Dory Funk Sr.,in 1969

to wrestle Antonio Inoki for the NWA World Championship.

I love Japan and I feel like I belong to two countries,

My home America and my second home, Japan.

I have wrestling friends who were teenagers

when I first came to Japan.

Now I meet their children and grandchildren who are now

my friends.

To all of my wrestling fans, Makoto ni arigato gozaimasu.

I want to thank (Sha Cho) Keiji Mutoh, President of All Japan Pro

Wrestling for the opportunity to have my Sayonara Tour and

final wrestling match in Japan.

I want to thank my student, Osamu Nishimura for being my

partner on my Sayonara Tour and in my final wrestling match

at Sumo Hall in Tokyo.

I want to thank all of my students in All Japan Pro Wrestling

who have carried on the tradition of the

"Dory Funk Method of Professional Wrestling,"

Osamu Nishimura, Masanobu Fuchi, Maunakea Mossman

(Taiyo Kea) and Genichiro Tenryu.

They have dedicated themselves to the highest level of

achievementin professional wrestling.

Some of my best memories in Japan and America are of the matches

この度、日本での最後のツアー・引退試合を行うチャンスを与えてくれた全日本プロレスの武藤敬司社長に心から感謝しています。

サヨナラツアー・両国での私の引退試合でタッグパートナーを勤める弟子、西村修にも感謝しています。

全日本プロレスにおいてドリー・ファンクがこれまでに作り上げてきた伝統的なプロレスを継承し活躍する西村修・渕正信・太陽ケヤ・そして天龍源一郎にも感謝いたします。彼らはプロレスラーとして自身の持つ最高レベルの技術を駆使し、これまで偉大な足跡を残しています。
